Injun Summer

That's what the weather was like today.  A very sunny, muggy 80 degrees and more at me casa.  Very unlike last weekend.  Which was very cloudy and blowy.  That's when the Wyrd family packed up and headed for the beach.

We went to every lookout point up to Cape Arago.  We walked out to the rocks at Shore Acres, where we became part of a huge tourist gathering.  They were gathering because the waves were so explosively high.  We breathed in the sea mist, along with the smells of newly sprouted woodland plants, and fertile rotting bark.  It was a wonderful day to be outside at the beach!

The foreign type people were not the only wildlife present.  The sea lion spot was completely covered with sea lions.  The big fat whiskery clowns were clinging to just about all of the reefs and rocks close to the shoreline.   They were right below the path at Cape Arago. They showed off their circus skills by scratching the tops of their heads with their flipper.  Big packs of ducks and birds that I don't usually see were also waiting out the storm in various cubbyholes of sea water.

So that was our first winter storm, a taste of what can happen around here.  It came so early too, with two weeks of nasty winter weather, now followed by a week of hot summer weather.   So instead of creating pots of yummy bean stew and chicken soup, and biscuit and corn muffin piles, I plant my many bulbs that will be popping up in the spring.

Hurricane October.

Despite what the local weather forecast says, it's already blowing with gusts up to 80 in Wyrdsville.  The lights flicker on and off, and a panel in my greenhouse lays in the back yard.  The parents called, they lost power for a bit already.  And this is just the beginning.  If we actually totally lose power, it may be awhile before they get things fixed, considering we have a few days of said weather.  Get your stuff ready people.  Groceries, water, cooking, cleaning.  Begone with you!

10 Reasons Not to move to Coos Bay.

1. Unlike a couple of years ago, housing prices are no longer cheap.  Infact they are now more expensive than the big city.  Thanks alot you goddamn property buying city people.

2. The high cost of everything else. Food. Utilities. Gas.

3.  Since we have voted not to give more money to the Police Department, they no longer answer most personal calls.  House robbed?  IF they decide to investigate it won't be until days later.  Car broken into and/or stolen?   They'll gladly send you a paper to fill out.  Maybe.  Freakazoid boyfriend beating your ass?  Don't bother.  Shoot off fireworks?  Speed?  Smoke the green stuff?  Oh you are SO going to jail.  They WILL get their money one way or the other.

4.  You know that extra money you decided not to give the school system because you thought they had enough overpaid administrators?  Well they decided not to provide books to each of your children at school.  So instead of going through the lesson together, and bringing home the textbook to do their work with or study, your child is going to fail his classes.  Oh but if your kid gets into a fight, or brings plays with a water pistol on the way home, or smokes pot, or looks suspicious in ANY way, (which is pretty much like, every kid), you can bet the police will respond without hesitation, and your child will be drug BACK to school and searched and questioned without your knowledge, let alone your presence.  Did I mention that they will be more than happy to let that drunken gun toting ex of yours remove your child from school without your knowledge and/or your permission as well?  Oh yeah!

5. We won't like you.  Oh, we will be nice enough, but push comes to shove, we really don't want you here.  If your grandparents didn't grow up here you aren't "one of us".  Locals are tired of getting ripped off by snooty outsiders who for some reason profess superiority.  So yeah, we are a bit clicky.

6. LNG.  Look it up.  And know this.  The 3rd degree burn zone incase of an accident is of a 3 mile radius.

7. Clearcutting.  Yes they still do it.  Why you ask?  Because there are still a few trees left standing.

8. Natural Disasters.  Look in the Encylopedia under Tsunamis and Earthquakes.  Then refer to Hurricane Winds.  We have those several times a year.  And oh yeah, incase of disaster we are always landlocked.  No way in, no way out.

9.  Immigrants.  Tons of them.

10.  Lack of medical care. Very few doctors and very few are worth a rat's ass.  And those that are you can't get in to see.  Oh and dentists?  Plan on getting that root canal in the big city.  They don't do those here.

It's not that I don't love my homeland, I so, so muchly do.  I just hope to see it prosperous and liveable in my lifetime.  It's a beautiful place and those in control just seem intent upon making what is the hub of the coast into a smoldering pile of chemicals.  (I didn't even mention the whole train fiasco, nor the tanker ships....and there IS a connection, you wait and see!)
