Screw You and the 92% Humidity You Rode In On.

I kid you not.  I feel like I live in the swamps of the south.  Even the wind brings no real relief.  Last night it cooled down.  For about an hour.  Though I won't stoop to air conditioning, (why get something you will only use once every 25 years ), a tent and a mattress in the back yard sounds mighty nice.  I should have purchased stock in fan sales. There is an upside to all this HEAT.  The cukes and watermelons are growing in massive abundance.  Oh yeah.

Coos Bay is Turning Tropical

And by tropical I mean swamp.  I don't remember when its ever been so warm, muggy and rainy all at the same time.  And I have lived here forever.  But as always, it doesn't rain for 7 days like it says.  It might rain once a day, then remain overcast and steamy til early afternoon.  Then the sun breaks out and lasers the place.

It's still cooler than inland.  If you plan on visiting soon, remember the bug spray.  You can step outside in broad daylight here and be covered with little pacific coast blood suckers.  Not the case when standing in the wind, but everywhere else is a potential hazard.

Miss Lee and I ventured to the Wednesday market today.  There were a few more booths, but produce was rather spendy.  Except for the bread and plant stand, things were rather unremarkable.  I bought a lavendar that was different from what I had.  There was drumming.  Drumming so loud that you couldn't hear anything else most of the time.  Still glad we had something that resembles culture.

Friday the 13th Kept Me Busy

Don't get me wrong, I L-O-V-E Friday the 13th.  Who wouldn't?  It's like a mini Halloween.  Ooooo... spooky!  I thoroughly enjoy it.  However, I did not enjoy the dentist visit and the physical meltdown that ensued from an abcess that occured next to a tooth that had already been root-canaled.  You did't know that could happen?  NEITHER DID I.  Yeah, you can pay all that money for a root canal, and perhaps a crown, and then STILL get an abcess that requires removal of said tooth anyway.  They have not removed said tooth yet, they are waiting to see if it "resolves".  In the same breath they said I was the worst they had ever seen, so what do you think my chances of "resolving" are.  Yeah, I know.  So it's mass antibiotics and feeling punily for me.

Plenty of distractions around however.  I harvested and pulled up the pea vines from my first planting.  I dug my first two potato patches and got about 15 lbs of lovely russet and red potatoes.  Celery and Swiss Chard will occupy the vacated earth pile.  Blueberries, strawberries and cherry tomatos have literally been throwing themselves into my kitchen, begging to be repurposed in some lovely recipe.

On the Internet front, I found a site which posted this most interesting and perhaps useful list of urls:

Oregon Makes Another Good Move.

Mayor KooblyWoobly recently signed several key solar policies designed to encourage solar manufacturing and the installation of solar hot water and photovoltaic (PV) systems in the state.

Well it's about time.  I was just reading how, if you produce your own solar power, that yes indeed you CAN sell it back to the power company, but ONLY until it reduces your power bill to 0.  Then they just steal it from you for free.  Why those dirty rats.

Also in the news, proof Alabama 11 year olds can drink as much As Oregon 11 year olds. Can you believe they layed all those charges on an 11 year old?  How responsible is a drunken 11 year old anyway.  This article just pisses me off to no end.  Has the world really gone this stupid?

Another Day To Be Grateful For The Oregon Coast

And I am so happy that I live here.  Sure, it was 80 degrees in the shade for most the day.  Still cooler than anywhere inland.  About 5 p.m. the wind kicked up.  Gale type occasional gusts but nice and cooling.

All the lillies are in full bloom now, and so are the dahlias, blue bells, crimson mullien, snapdragons and lilac.  Many of the sedums are spiking up huge bloom clusters as well.  The peppers, tomatoes, watermelon and cukes are all in miniature form.  I'm freezing a few peas and berries, but most of the produce we just eat fresh.

We had pasta salad with our chicken for dinner, full of fresh farm eggs and sweet red peppers and peas from the garden.  Home-made strawberry shortcake for desert, with fresh whipped cream and strawberries and blueberries we grew too.

We sat on the porch after dinner and beheld the great valley, as it is known to us in the summer, (sometimes in the winter it just becomes the great lake),  and watched the birdies playing about the hedges and flowers on our porch.  A hummingbird has her scheduled route in the evening.  Handfuls of gold finches fight over food bags.  A raven swooped back and forth right over our porch, then up in the trees and back again.  It was small and young looking.  Excitement!

"They" say that thousands have flocked to the coast.  I really wouldn't know.  I'm enjoying my own little forest too much.

A Day In Eugene

Which is where I went last Saturday.  We took the granddaughter there to meet up with her Bend family.  Then we ditched her.  Until next year.  It was HOT.  HOT.  HOT.  We garage saled before her scheduled abandonment.  I bought her a vibrant colored fuzzy scarf, a fashionable mask, and a big stuffed bulldog.  What did I care, they were'nt going home with me.  I myself scored a few pieces of pottery said to have been cleaned out from the college pottery class.  Ooooo, neato.  A few pieces of guardian ware and a few books later we delivered granddaughter.

Then off it was to the Saturday market, where I about DIED from heat stroke.  There were cool shady places to be so it wasn't too bad.  I loved looking at all the plants in the farmers market, though I must tell you, the vegetables and fruits are cheaper here at the Wednesday Coos Bay farmer's market.  Why is this?  There were many, many, many, many people.  We didn't stay all that long.  We pondered going to a few more places but it was hot and lots of traffic and we just started zigzagging home, hitting a few more garage sales along the way.  It's a great way to visit with people and we muchly enjoyed ourselves.  I have more plant books!

I left America's Birthday Party Early

Oh it started out well enough.  Beautiful string of warm weather days.  Visits with neighbors, friends and family on my porch.  We went to the parents for a family weenie roast.   Family, and friends that have been around long enough to be family.  It was a wonderful day of old stories, jokes, troubles, gossip, eating, bird watching, bay watching, people watching, swinging.  Then a cloud came over our little party.  Perhaps the fact that everyone brought potato salad all at once for the same event should have been a sign.  A family friend got very ill and ended up in the hospital the next day (no not food related).  Derek woke up very ill as well (probably food related).  I wasn't feeling so hot myself.  Little troubles and hinderances plagged us all.  The party split up by early evening and our little unit all went to bed early.  We, who usually CAMP and PLOT and PARK so that we can see at least 3 seperate nights of fireworks, did not see ONE regular display.  Well except for that little work party that we took the children too.  I kind of like those little gatherings best myself.
